Luke 10:40 But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.
Luke 10:41-42 And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.
This account in The LORD GOD’S Word provides us a good example of choosing quality over quantity. Mary and Martha were the sisters of Lazarus, who lived in the town of Bethany, which was close to Jerusalem. LORD JESUS obviously had a close relationship with this family, as evidenced in John 11:5 Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. When Jesus was visiting Martha, Mary, and Lazarus, The LORD’S Word provides us the information that Martha was cumbered about much serving, as we read in the above Scripture of Luke 10:40. The definition of cumbered is: to obstruct, to impede, to hinder or be a hindrance to.
Martha was doing all of the serving and was caught up in the hindrance of busyness. She obviously was feeling overwhelmed, because she spoke to JESUS and asked Him to talk with Mary, her sister, so Mary would come and join her in her busyness. Martha asked JESUS: “Lord, don’t you care that my sister left me alone?” She was feeling sorry for herself and wanted JESUS to feel sorry for her as well. However, LORD JESUS replied to her by stating to Martha that her sister Mary had chosen the good part. What is that good part? Spending time at the feet of JESUS!
In Luke 10:39 GOD’S Word states: And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus’ feet, and heard his word.
Mary had the desire to dwell in the presence of JESUS CHRIST and chose to sit at His feet. She chose to listen to His life-giving words. Nothing else in the world could possibly compare with this precious gift! It appears that Martha chose to follow her mind and focus on her list of tasks, rather than her heart and what the best thing for her really was. She may have felt left out and also wanted to spend time with LORD JESUS, but allowed the busyness to hinder her. It appears that she didn’t want to be the only one caught up in the busyness, and desired her sister to join her, perhaps to be cumbered as well.
Folks, this is certainly a life lesson for all of us: to choose quality over quantity in our lives. A person could have a full calendar and be involved in many activities throughout the year, but not be fulfilled by any of them. These activities could be a result of feeling obligated, guilt, ambition, or even jealousy, to “keep up with the Joneses”. It could be a result of your children’s sporting events, school projects, volunteer projects, etc. When all is said and done, how many of these “activities” make you truly happy and truly make your children happy? How many of you feel overwhelmed, or cumbered at the end of the week? How many of you spend quiet time with The LORD GOD every day in prayer and studying His precious Word? How many of you spend time with your children each day in prayer and teaching them The LORD GOD’S Word? This is an example of spending time at JESUS’ feet and none of your activities can compare with this precious gift the LORD GOD has provided all of us if we would only make the right choice.
In Luke 21:33 JESUS states: Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.
I was raised with the mindset that the more activities you are involved in, the happier you will be. Back in 2004 shortly after I was saved, I began my training in bible school and allowed myself to get caught up in the “church busyness”. I thought the more “prayer breakfasts” and “meetings” that I attended that somehow it would fulfill me more and be beneficial toward my walk with The LORD. The only result from these activities was me feeling overwhelmed, cumbered, and farther away from my personal relationship with JESUS CHRIST. As I grew and matured in my fellowship with The LORD GOD, He revealed His knowledge to me and blessed me with ears to hear His perfect advice for my life. To slow down and focus on what HE was speaking to my heart, NOT the pastor, NOT the congregational members, NOT the prayer group, NOT the latest “Christian” book, NOT that “Ladies” conference, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera!
Busyness loves company; therefore, many of these busybodies within the church prey on one another, whether intentionally or unintentionally. They persuade others to partake in their “Christian Busyness Calendar” with them so they don’t feel left out. Nothing but another hindrance of the enemy of our souls, who is the devil.
Slowing down and spending time “At JESUS’ Feet” by studying The LORD’S Word, staying in prayer and being mindful of the pitfalls of daily busyness has been a true blessing for me. There are times when I allow myself to get cumbered with worldly tasks, and The LORD GOD gently reminds me to be still and focus on Him.
In Psalms 46:10 The LORD GOD reminds us: Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.
It’s very easy to get caught up in the busyness and sacrifice quality for quantity, especially when folks are not saved and still focused on the world. You would think that once a person is saved that this would be a clear obstacle to avoid. NOT SO!
It appears that the “quantity over quality” choices are just traded for other things, when a person is saved, if they are not completely in tune with The LORD GOD ALMIGHTY. Some folks within the “church” have become so obsessed with “revival” meetings, “healing” services,”Christian” retreats, the latest “Christian” book, “Christian” musical artists and concerts, and famous “Christian” speakers that they have reduced their relationship with The LORD to a circus of sorts. Many of these people are focused on the worldly authors of these books, the musicians, the speakers, etc. rather than how close their walk is with The LORD GOD.
Personally, I have never understood “revival” meetings. The HOLY SPIRIT moves when He chooses to, not when someone decides there will be a “revival” two weeks from now. How many of you have attended a “healing” service and see folks go in with sickness and leave with the same sickness? There’s nothing wrong with the person that desires to be healed, there’s something wrong with the person that organized the “healing” service in the first place; maybe their walk is not right with The LORD GOD. If we are being filled up with The LORD on a daily basis and staying in constant communion with Him, why do we need to attend “retreats”? If The LORD GOD has provided us with His Living Word, the Holy Bible, why do we need “Christian” books to explain in the author’s terms what is already written in GOD’S Word? That is The HOLY SPIRIT’S responsibility to reveal the truth to us, NOT the author of the latest “Christian” book. How can that author write about The LORD’S Word better than The LORD GOD, who is the author of every word in the Holy Bible?
In John 14:26 GOD’S Word states: But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
In 1 Timothy 3:16-17 GOD’S Word states: All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.
We are warned about the falling away of the church in 2 Thessalonians 2:3 when GOD’S Word states: Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
People are trading quality for quantity in their daily lives by choosing not to spend time at the feet of JESUS CHRIST, by spending time in prayer with The LORD, by studying His Word, by listening for His still, small voice, and by being obedient to His will for their lives. It appears that people are more excited about being entertained and having their ears scratched instead by false prophets, false church leadership, and false doctrines. That is the reason why these “mega churches” are so popular. This is the beginning of the falling away that The LORD GOD warns us about.
In 2 Timothy 4:3-4 GOD’S Word states: For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
Folks, it’s time to re-examine your lives. It’s time to focus on your personal walk with The LORD GOD and to make sure you are teaching your children about JESUS CHRIST. This doesn’t mean buying them a trendy “Christian” T-shirt or jewelry, this doesn’t mean you overbooking your schedule for those countless “Christian” conferences and services, this doesn’t mean reading the latest “Christian” book on the market, this doesn’t mean having a “JESUS” mug on your kitchen table, this doesn’t mean sitting in the same pew and putting money in the plate every week and crossing this task off your “busyness calendar”. THIS MEANS REALIZING THAT WE ARE ALL SINNERS AND DESERVE ETERNAL DAMNATION WITHOUT THE PRECIOUS BLOOD OF JESUS CHRIST.
Romans 3:23-25 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God: Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;

This means repenting and confessing your sins to JESUS CHRIST and truly believing that JESUS CHRIST is who He says He is: The only-begotten Son of GOD The FATHER who suffered and died on the cross and arose from the grave on the third day. This means getting baptized as JESUS did; totally immersed in the water and NOT sprinkled. This means realizing that without JESUS CHRIST you will be condemned to hell. This means dedicating your life to following JESUS CHRIST and staying in prayer with The LORD GOD, studying His precious Word daily.
There is certainly nothing wrong with wearing a “JESUS” T-shirt or having a “JESUS” mug. You could very well be sharing The LORD’S Word with someone when you wear that shirt in public, as long as what’s on the shirt is according to The LORD’S Word. But these items should not be the foundation of your relationship with JESUS CHRIST as this is a shaky foundation and a poor substitute.
Focus on the quality of your life and not the quantity. Bigger is not always better! Ask yourself where the busyness will take you when all is said and done. When you take your final breath on this earth you will be rewarded by the treasure of sitting at the feet of JESUS CHRIST and your close relationship with Him. You will NOT be rewarded by the overwhelming worldly activities that really don’t bring The LORD GOD any glory. I pray that you choose the good part, which shall not be taken away from you.
FATHER GOD, I pray that this message will reach those that it is intended for and that they choose to seek You through Your precious Son, JESUS CHRIST, to bring You all the Glory. I pray this in the Name of JESUS CHRIST, Amen!
